Police in Rukungiri District are investigating two separate murder incidents, one involving a 56-year-old woman allegedly killed by her husband over suspected infidelity, and another involving a 42-year-old man found dead in his home.
In the first incident, Dinavence Sanyu, a resident of Kakanyenye Cell, Karuhembe Parish in Kebisoni Sub-county, was reportedly assaulted by her husband, Leo Tumwijukye, 59, on the night of June 13, 2025.
According to preliminary reports, Tumwijukye allegedly returned home and found another man in his house, who is said to have escorted Sanyu from a local bar. The man, believed to have been intoxicated, reportedly fell asleep in the house and was discovered by Tumwijukye upon his return.
The man was arrested on charges of criminal trespass. Shortly afterward, Tumwijukye allegedly turned on his wife and severely beat her. Sanyu succumbed to her injuries at Royal Care Clinic in Mabanga Trading Centre, where she had been rushed for treatment.
In a separate incident, police are also investigating the murder of Benson Turyahikayo, 42, a resident of Rwakiriba Cell in Bugangari Sub-county. His body was discovered inside his house on June 15, 2025, at around 1:00 PM. The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, and no arrests had been made by press time.
Kigezi Region Police spokesperson ASP Elly Matte confirmed both incidents and stated that investigations are ongoing. “We are treating both cases seriously and call upon the public to share any relevant information that may aid in the investigations,” he said.
Police have launched a manhunt for Tumwijukye, who is currently on the run, as well as for the unknown suspects linked to Turyahikayo’s death.
The bodies of the deceased were taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for postmortem examinations.
