KAMPALA
The Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango has confirmed that the commander of Kampala Metropolitan Police, SCP Stephen Tanui, has been receiving reports of individuals wearing civilian clothes impounding motor cycles without authorization.
He said Police has put measures to address this issue and ensure the safety and efficiency of motor cycle operations. He said that any civilian found impounding motor cycles will be subjected to immediate arrest and prosecution in court.
Commander Kampala Metropolitan police SCP Tanui said that motor cycle operations must be conducted exclusively by police officers in uniform.
He added that operations should be led by Traffic Police officers, with support from other uniformed police officers. “No police officer, except Traffic Police, is authorized to impound a motor cycle” said Tanui.
Tanui urged all Motorcyclists not to surrender their motor cycles to plain clothed individuals but report such cases to police about the location of such unauthorized operations immediately.
He noted that all impounded motor cycles must be taken to designated Police stations not any other location and ordered all motorcycles impounded by the bodaboda leadership in Kampala to be released immediately to their rightful owners or to the nearest police station.
In a press release by the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, the directives are aimed at ensuring the security and transparency of motor cycle operations within Kampala Metropolitan Area. He urged all residents and motorcyclists to cooperate fully with police in implementing these measures
