The installation of Professor Yunus Daud Mgaya as the new Chancellor of Kampala International University (KIU) on June 14, 2023, marks a new chapter for the institution. Professor Mgaya replaces Professor Mohamoud Mamdan, who had been in charge of the university since July 2020. This is the fourth chancellorship for KIU since its establishment in 2001.
KIU, ranked as the best private university in Uganda according to the recent Webometrics report, has established itself as a center of excellence in research and innovation. Professor Mgaya is seen as an individual who will propel the university forward in these areas.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of KIU, Alhajji Dr. Hassan Basajjabalaba, acknowledged the rigorous process of selecting Professor Mgaya, which involved extensive scrutiny, arguments, and engagements with various individuals. After considering six candidates, the committee narrowed it down to Professor Mgaya and one other person before ultimately concluding that he was the right choice.

He highlighted the importance of staying relevant and up-to-date with new technologies like blockchain and artificial intelligence in order to contribute to socio-economic development.
Furthermore, KIU appointed Professor Maud Kamatenesi as the new University Council chairperson on June 12, 2023, replacing Professor Fred Wabwire-Mangen. Professor Kamatenesi congratulated Professor Mgaya on his installation and expressed confidence in his leadership and vision for the university.
