Residents of Mbarara city took to the streets yesterday 2nd October 2024, to protest the delayed refurbishment of Katete Bridge, expressing frustration over broken promises from the council. The demonstration, led by area chairpersons, including Katete Central, drew a large crowd, prompting police intervention. Tear gas was used to disperse the protesters, making for a tense scene.
Local businessman Butime Geoffrey, also known as Uncle Speed, shared his concerns, stating that the city council’s promise to begin repairs on August 15th has not to materialized.
He noted that the alternative route through Nyamitanga is costly, and businesses are struggling, yet authorities remain silent.
Katete Bridge connects Isingiro district to Mbarara city, serving hundreds of people daily due to Katete’s large population.
Mbarara City South Mayor Jomo Mugabi acknowledged the issue, revealing that the government has entrusted the UPDF with the contract, and construction will commence before october ends.
Initial Budget Allocation for the bridge was 5 billion in the 2024-2025 national budget but was later removed due to budgeting disagreements. The current funding received by Mbarara city council is 500 million for bridge refurbishment.
It should be noted that the bridge has undergone multiple repairs, including a 25 million shilling renovation that was investigated by the Inspectorate of Government due to shoddy workmanship.
However, the delayed bridge refurbishment has sparked concerns among residents and business owners.
