As the people of Rwenzori are still retreating from last week’s ADF rebel attacks on Lhubiriha Secondary School, a heavy downpour has left houses flooded and crop gardens destroyed by running water that swept through parts of Kasese district.
The rains that started on Thursday brought panic amongst residents and area leaders as sections of Nyamwamba river burst its banks.
John Cliff Wamala, communications officer at Uganda RedCross says the incident has left villages of Nyakasanga, Kamwirikwizi, Saluti A&B, Mawa Market, Kitoro and Kisagazi at risk.
He also noted that Kilembe road which connects Kasese town to the Rwenzori mountains has been cut off at Namuhunga junction.
“Our Action Team members are working with local authorities, alerting the community members near the waterway especially in town to evacuate. Advisories are being issued both at household level and through community radios,” he said
By press time, no fatalities had been reported but authorieties were working tooth and nail to make assessments to establish the number of affected persons, they are also mobilizing those within the river catchment areas to vacate to nearby worship places or join relatives elsewhere.
