The Rotary Club of Kampala North (KANOs) has held a reading session with pupils of Treasure Life Youth Centre, Kamwokya. The gesture was done as part of Uganda’s national Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R) day, where they donated new storybooks to the children.
D.E.A.R day is celebrated annually on 15th March and is intended for everyone to dedicate part of the day reading.
Caroline Bavuga, the president of the Rotary Club Kampala North says the club club took efforts to improve learners literacy skills by promoting a D.E.A.R day campaign by donating reading materials to the kids because it benefits them by restoring their hope, to show them that someone out there cares for them.
She emphasized the need for learners to develop a reading culture that will enable them acquire knowledge to enhance their critical thinking skills.
Rebecca Birabwa, a teacher at the school said the TLC community center in particular has pupils that come around who are of school-going ages, but because their parents cannot afford school fees charged in other schools, they just bring their children there so that they can get some basic literacy.
She further Called for other NGOs and community groups working on similar issues to collaborate and share efforts to address the needs of these children comprehensively, by mobilizing collective action and resources which she believes makes a greater difference in the lives of these children as well as helping to contribute to building a stronger and more supportive community.
