A guard manning State House, Nairobi, was on Monday morning brutally killed in a spear attack outside Gate D.
The assailant, Kinyuka Kinyumi, 56, approached the checkpoint carrying a sack, and pulled out a spear which he used to fatally stab the officer in the chest, killing him in an unprovoked attack.
The deceased officer has been identified as Ramadhan Khamisi Matanka, attached to the elite General Service Unit (GSU), he was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival due to excessive bleeding.
Further reports indicate that the attack occurred as officers manning the gate were inspecting a vehicle entering the compound. Kinyuka is said to have emerged suddenly from behind a flower bed before launching the fatal strike.
Police from Kilimani Sub-county led by their Police Commander Patricia Yegon and DCI Hussein Mahat visited both the scene and the hospital to assess the situation.
Police says the suspect was subdued and arrested at the scene by fellow officers. During preliminary interrogation, he allegedly claimed he had been “sent by Satan” to carry out the attack. Investigators believe he posed as a street dweller and concealed the weapon inside the sack to avoid detection.
Detectives from the DCI headquarters are reviewing CCTV footage to trace the suspect’s movements and determine whether he acted alone.
At the time of the incident, President William Ruto was reportedly inside State House and was later scheduled to leave for an official engagement in Konza City.
Police say the motive behind the bizarre killing remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing.
