Border security between Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) remains calm despite the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC, according to a recent update from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF).
Maj. Kiconco Tabaro, the Public Information Officer for the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division, confirmed that all activities on the Ugandan side, including tourism, farming, and local trade, are continuing uninterrupted. However, dozens of heavy trucks on transit through Cyanika to Goma remain parked at Nyakabande in Kisoro, awaiting the normalization of the situation.
“Our security forces are vigilant and active on the Ugandan side to avoid possible infiltration by ADF criminals and ex-combatants who may disguise themselves as refugees,” Maj. Tabaro stated. He added that district and local security committees are conducting security awareness campaigns along the border.
There are reports that some suspected Ugandans, previously serving short and long-term sentences at Munzenze Prison in Goma, escaped during the recent takeover of the town by M23 rebels. It is suspected that some of these escapees could be ADF criminals wanted back in Uganda.
“We call for heightened vigilance to avoid possible infiltration by suspected ADF criminals,” Maj. Tabaro emphasized. “We will continue to monitor the situation very closely for the safety of our country.”
The situation remains under close observation to ensure the security and safety of Uganda.
