WAKISO
At least three suspects are in police custody after they were arrested in connection with a spate of motorcycle robberies in Wakiso district.
The arrests followed intelligence-led operation on February 13, after which 10 suspected stolen motorcycles were recovered.
This was after Ssesanga Equiam, a Boda Boda rider reported that he was attacked and robbed of his motorcycle, registration number UMA 191 DV (Bajaj Boxer) at around 10pm on the same day.
Police said the assailants, allegedly armed with pangas, forcefully took the motorcycle before fleeing the scene.
“Acting on intelligence leads, security operatives tracked down the suspects to their hideouts in Old Kampala and Bukesa–Nankulabye, where 10 suspected stolen motorcycles were recovered,” said SP Racheal Kawala, the spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan Police.
The recovered motorcycles include registration numbers UDH 516H, UGB 248V, UEV 046C, UDH 746H, UDK 657F and UDN 001C, as well as four Bajaj motorcycles without number plates.
During interrogation, police said the suspects confessed to involvement in motorcycle robberies, highway phone snatching, house breaking and theft, among other related criminal activities.
Police have since urged members of the public who may have lost motorcycles to visit the relevant stations with proof of ownership to aid identification and recovery. Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
