On July 31st, 2023, the Directorate of Counter-Terrorism and the territorial team in Kampala Metropolitan East responded to an explosion in Banda zone II, Nakawa division. The explosion occurred after an individual tampered with an assembled IED. Thankfully, nobody was hurt, but the incident raised concerns about potential terrorist activity in the area.
The task team quickly cordoned off the area and arrested the suspect, Mugabe Collins, aged 23. Upon investigation, the authorities found an assembled IED and an assortment of bomb-making materials. In total, the collection included three jerry cans of nitric acid, methanol, ethanol, six bottles of potassium nitrate, potassium bromide, ammonium nitrate, lead nitrate, aluminium metal powder, and note and textbooks on bomb-making materials.
Collins had even taken steps to construct two IEDs, one of which exploded accidentally after he tampered with it at night.
The authorities are now interrogating Collins to establish whether he is linked to any terror group and looking for any potential targets.
The Directorate of Counter-Terrorism praised the local community in Banda zone II, Nakawa, for their efforts and reminded everyone of the importance of continued vigilance in the community. The arrest serves as a reminder of the authorities’ commitment to counter and neutralize all forms of terrorism and extremism in the country.
