A suspected criminal has been killed in an alleged mob justice incident, just days after his release from Nyamushekyera Government Prison on criminal charges, Greater Bushenyi Regional Police has reported.
The deceased, identified as Deo Atwijukire, also known as Astari, 22, and a resident of Omukabaare B Village, Kikumbo Parish, Kirugu Sub-county in Rubirizi District, was killed and his body dumped in a banana plantation on Sunday.
Preliminary reports indicate that Atwijukire was part of a criminal gang that has been terrorizing the area.
“He was a habitual thief, well known for frequenting prison, and it was alleged that he had just returned from Nyamushekyera Prison,” police said.

Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, condemned the act, warning the public against mob justice.
“The evidence you may have against anyone suspected of committing an offence only gives you the power to report or arrest and hand them over to the authorities. It does not in any way give you the right to kill or sentence such a person to punishment,” SP Tayebwa stated.
The body was taken to Rugazi Health Centre IV mortuary for post-mortem examination as investigations continue.
