Three individuals, including two teachers and a school director, have been arrested for attempting to bribe a Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) scout ahead of the Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).
The suspects, identified as Odongo George, Director of Atura Community Day Primary School, Ekut Simon, 32, a former teacher at the same school, and Awoko Lavoiser, 26, a teacher at St. Gracious Primary School, were arrested by the Territorial Police in North Kyoga Region, Lira City, attempting to offer a bribe
According to police, the trio allegedly offered the UNEB scout UGX 1 million to influence the conduct of the PLE, which is set to commence today.
“We are committed to ensuring the integrity of our national examinations,” said Dan Odongo, the UNEB Executive Director. “We will not hesitate to arrest and prosecute anyone attempting to compromise the credibility of our exams, regardless of their status.”
The suspects were arrested at Garden Hotel in Lira City after police received a tip-off. The money was recovered, and investigations are ongoing. They will be charged under section 26 (1) g of the UNEB Act, which carries a maximum penalty of five years imprisonment or a fine of UGX 20 million or both.
UNEB has warned the public against engaging in examination malpractices, assuring that security agencies will take swift action against anyone found flouting the rules.
