A wave of shock and sorrow has engulfed Kitgum Municipality following the horrific rape and murder of a beloved school cook, Agnes Aneno, aged 36, who worked at Kitgum Boys Primary School. Her body was discovered on Wednesday morning, tied to a tree in Nyanya Cell, Central Division, with signs of severe physical assault.
According to local residents, Aneno’s cries for help were heard in the early morning hours. Concerned neighbors rushed to her aid and transported her to Kitgum General Hospital where she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Kitgum District Police Commander confirmed that a murder case has been opened and investigations are underway. A postmortem examination is in progress to determine the precise cause of death. As of now, no suspects have been arrested in connection with the crime.
“This is a deeply disturbing act,” said a police spokesperson. “We are pursuing all leads and urge anyone with information to come forward.”
The tragic incident has left the school community and local residents reeling, Teachers and pupils at Kitgum Boys Primary School described Aneno as “kind-hearted” and “dedicated to her work.”
Authorities have promised to step up security and expedite the investigation. Meanwhile, civil society groups have called for greater protection of women and swift justice for victims of gender-based violence.
Aneno leaves behind two children and a grieving extended family. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.
