Uganda and the United States have signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen collaboration in the health sector, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation aimed at tackling infectious diseases and improving national health systems.
The signing ceremony, presided over by Hon. Matia Kasaija, Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, was attended by senior Ugandan government officials, U.S. Embassy representatives, and affiliate organizations. The agreement underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations in advancing public health.
Minister Kasaija hailed the MoU as a “building block” in the long-standing U.S. support for Uganda’s health programs, which have included interventions in HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, maternal and child health, and global health security.
Government has committed USD 1.7 billion in support over the period 2026–2030. Uganda, in turn, will gradually increase its own health sector budget to USD 500 million during the same period, ensuring sustainability as U.S. contributions taper.
The Minister emphasized that the collaboration goes beyond disease-specific interventions. “This partnership will result in improvements in national systems, institutions, and workforce capacity,” he noted, commending the U.S. Government’s intention to provide incremental budget support and joint reviews of implementation mechanisms.
The MoU reflects a shared commitment to preventing the spread of emerging and existing infectious diseases. Both governments pledged to work closely to enhance Uganda’s preparedness and resilience, positioning the country as a regional leader in health security.
Minister Kasaija called on all stakeholders to uphold the provisions of the MoU and ensure its practical implementation for the benefit of both nations. He expressed gratitude to the U.S. Government for its consistent support, describing the agreement as a testament to the strong and growing relationship between Uganda and the United States.
