Ugandan diplomat to the East African Community (EAC) and Executive Secretary of the EAC Kiswahili Commission, Dr Caroline Asiimwe, has been arrested in Kenya on graft allegations.
Asiimwe, was reportedly arrested at Mombasa International Airport on Sunday night by Kenyan authorities.
It is alleged that the senior officer was arrested on alleged corruption scandals in the East African Kiswahili Commission where she is being accused of misuse of funds meant to promote Kiswahili language in East African member states.
James Kakooza, Uganda’s representative to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), has criticized the manner to which Asiimwe was arrested, pointing out that they are still investigating graft reports at the commission
Kakooza also said that the commission’s accountancy headed by Joseph Malesi, Principal Accountant is implicated in multiple corruption Scandals which EALA is investigating.
He noted that they already logged a complaint to the EAC Secretary General, H.E. Veronica M. Nduva, regarding graft allegations within the Kiswahili Commission and wondered reasons for Asiimwe’s arrest before investigations have been completed.
