In the evening of yesterday Tuesday July7, a recorded video of Local Defense Units personnel assaulting the Mityana district Chairman LCV Joseph Luzige awashed social media genring mass criticism against the conduct of the Uganda security officers.
Luzige who was reportedly driving to the hospital coincidentally found LDU personnel enforcing COVID-19 directives beating up a woman who had fallen off a Boda Boda, in the process of saving her dear life, the anguished officials instead turned to assault him.
“I was going to the hospital and found them beating a woman who had fallen down and was bleeding profusely. When I asked them to arrest instead of beating people, one of them who was drunk started pushing me,” Chairman Luzige said.
Despite identifying himself as the Chairman LCV for security reasons, the LDUs couldn’t lend an ear to listen but rather continued assaulting him in presence of the onlooking locals.
Luzige vowed to fill in the complaint over the incident urging that he has always heard of LDus to misconducts and too much torture in Mityana district and other areas.
Responding to the incident against a local government serving leader, Ms Gertrude Rose Gamwera, the Secretary General Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA) expressed dissatisfactions over the assaults calling for justice to prevail.
Gamwera has asked UPDF and other security heads to arrest and charge the culprits. She also appealed to President Museveni to intervene into the matters.
Brig Richard Karemire, the UPDF spokesperson condemned the actions of the LDUs against civilians.
“I have just spoken to Mr Luzige and have expressed our surprise and condemned strongly such acts against our civilian. Perpetrators will be arrested and prosecuted,” said Karemire.
