There is an increasing vice of violence at functions like funerals in most parts of the country and on several occasions these are fueled by the youth.
The latest incident is the violence at the burial of Sulaiman Jakaana Nadduli, a son to former minister without portfolio Hajji Abdul Nadduli on Monday.
The event escalated into a violent when a group of the youth purported to bebmembers of the National Unity Platform (NUP) attacked and assaulted Mpologoma Majjambere, an NRM political activist, after he attempted to stop them from politicizing the funeral. The victim was roughed up and repeatedly hit with chairs and blunt objects, before sympathizers came to his rescue.
Another incident was at the burial of singer Mathias Walukaga’s father in March when NUP supporters attacked and forced out of the funeral artists Catherine Kusasiira and Big Eye accusing them of supporting the ruling government
Sharon Arach Oyat, the spokesperson of the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) says these youth are being used by some selfish individuals for their political gains. She condemned the incident and urged the youth to know their worth than being used by politicians.
“It’s not a good habit to the youth that are being used in such incidences. Youth should know their rights and prevent being used in inciting violence,” said Sharon Arach Oyat, UPC spokesperson
The police spokesperson Fred Enanga also condemned the incident and urged the public to desist from such violent acts.
“We have noticed that such violent and disruptive behaviours during funerals majorly by opposition activists is becoming common. And it is against this background, that we call upon individuals and political groups, to stop such inhuman behaviors at funerals.” Enanga said
Police has already started a manhunt for the culprits who assaulted Majjembere
“For those who perpetrated violence during the funeral, we wish to inform them that their actions were unjustified and uncalled for. As a result, a serious manhunt for all of them has begun. We shall not rest until when they are brought to book.”
