The Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) has officially disqualified a key aspirant from the race for party presidency, citing gross violations of party regulations and misleading public statements.
In a letter signed by Hajji Kazimbiraine Mahmoud, the Chairman of the Party Electoral Commission, the disqualification is directed at Mr. Enrap, one of the declared aspirants for the UPC top seat. The decision comes after the Party Electoral Commission (PEC) reviewed Mr. Enrap’s conduct and found it inconsistent with the UPC Constitution and electoral guidelines.
According to the letter, Mr. Enrap had earlier declared his intention to contest for the UPC Party Presidency and submitted the required Application/Declaration of Interest form on May 8, 2025. However, the PEC accuses him of misrepresenting facts to the public during a press conference held on May 22, 2025, where he claimed to have been nominated unopposed.
The PEC refuted this claim, emphasizing that the nomination process was still ongoing and that multiple aspirants were still under consideration. “This misleading statement grossly violated the electoral roadmap,” the letter reads, adding that it amounted to an act of misinformation to both UPC members and the general public.
The party also cited media publications and statements falsely suggesting that the PEC had disqualified another aspirant, Mr. Jimmy Akena, and declared Mr. Enrap unopposed. “We wish to categorically state that this was not in the ruling,” the commission clarified.
Due to these infractions, the PEC officially disqualified Mr. Enap from the race and revoked his Certificate of Nomination. “You are hereby DISQUALIFIED as an aspiring candidate from the process of election of the UPC Party President,” the letter concludes.
