UPC has said they will participate in the election of local council leaders and women councils despite the limited time for preparations.
“UPC would like to inform the general membership and confirm to the public that it is going to fully participate in the elections of LC I, II and Women Councils.”
This was disclosed by the party spokesperson Sharon Oyat Arach during their weekly media briefing on Wednesday.
Last week, the Independent Electoral Commission of Uganda released a roadmap for local council I & II and women council elections. This was after the commission suspended the election of women councils last year on grounds of lack of resources.
Also, on 25 July this year, government extended the term of office for local council administrative units for six months because the commission did not have the required Shs6m billions to organize the election.
According to the roadmap, elections for Local Council 1 will be conducted on November 21, 2023 while village women councis election will be conducted on November 14. Local council II elections are the last series of the election and are slated for December 5.
UPC urged more women to participate in these elections at all levels to acquire leadership skills for national positions.
Arach further said the party will front candidates for election across the country and set up campaign committees to canvass votes for UPC candidates.
“In case of more than one candidate, the party shall hold primaries, and where possible, consensus is highly encouraged as was the case with the recently held Oyam North by-elections,” she said
She appealed to Ugandan lovers of political change to massively vote for UPC in local council 1 & 2 and women council elections as they prepare for government transition in the 2026 general elections.
