Isingiro District is reeling from a wave of violence that broke out between supporters of incumbent Member of Parliament Alex Byarugaba Bakunda and his rival Mujuni Maari Asensio under the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket. The clashes, which occurred in Isingiro South constituency, resulted in significant property damage and injuries.
According to eyewitnesses, the violence began when supporters of Bakunda attacked their opponents, setting ablaze two vehicles, including a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle and a white Toyota Harrier. Many supporters of Mujuni were seriously injured in the attack, with some requiring medical attention.
The incident has prompted the suspension of NRM parliamentary campaigns in the district until further notice. The district security committee, led by Resident District Commissioner Adah Nasiima, is working to prevent further escalation and ensure a peaceful process as the 2026 general elections approach.
This is not the first time Isingiro District has experienced electoral violence. In 2021, four people were killed in similar clashes during the general elections. The police have arrested ten suspects in connection with the latest violence and are actively investigating the incident.
“We are closely monitoring the situation and working to restore order,” said a police spokesperson. “We urge all parties to refrain from violence and allow the electoral process to proceed peacefully.”
The Electoral Commission has also condemned the violence, emphasizing the importance of peaceful and responsible conduct during the electoral period. As the 2026 general elections draw near, stakeholders are calling for calm and urging supporters to respect the law.
