The UNEB’s Executive Director, Daniel Nokorach Odongo has this afternoon revealed that 14,879 out of the 364,469 candidates that Sat for 2023 UCE exams completly failed UCE Exams. At least 64,782 passed in Division one, 85,566 in Division two, 83,545 in Division three and 112,923 in Division four.
He also noted that over 2,700 candidates were reported to have missed the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams last year, according to the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB). Out of the total 364,469 candidates registered for the 2023 Senior Four exams, only 361,695 candidates appeared for the examination.
From the total number of candidates who registered, 49.5% were males and 50.5% were females. Of those who appeared for the examination, there were 279,032 males and 182,663 females.
The candidature for the 2023 exams increased by 4.3% compared to the previous year, totaling 15,008 more candidates. The candidates who sat for the exams at 3,808 examination centers, with 32.5% of them being beneficiaries of the Universal Secondary Education program.
In terms of performance, female candidates outperformed males in the English Language subject. However, in other subjects such as History, Geography, the Sciences, and Commerce, males performed better, with the differences being particularly significant.
In Chemistry, male candidates showed better performance in the higher grades, but the overall percentage of females obtaining at least a pass was slightly higher. This disparity in performance between male and female candidates has been observed over the years.
Overall, the 2023 UCE exams saw an increase in candidature and the presence of more female candidates performing well in certain subjects. These results highlight the importance of continued efforts to improve access and equality in education, as well as the need for targeted interventions to narrow the performance gap between males and females in various academic disciplines.
