The directorate of traffic and road safety has revised the death toll of Kitaleba road crash, confirming only 46 deaths.
Earlier this morning (22nd October 2025), the media reported a fatal road crash and several injuries in a road crash in Kitaleba Village near Asili Farm on the Kampala-Gulu Highway.
The collision involved four vehicles: a UBF 614X Isuzu bus belonging to Nile Star Coaches, CGO 5132AB Toyota Surf, UBK 647C Tata Lorry and UAM 045V Isuzu bus belonging to Planet Company. Initial investigations indicate both buses collided head-on while overtaking, triggering a chain reaction that caused the other vehicles to overturn.
Sp Micheal Kananura, the Uganda Police Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety Public relations officer said the number of the passengers who died in the accident reduced to 46. The death toll was revised after some victims previously reported dead were later found to be unconscious.
Both the deceased and the injured were transported to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby medical facilities by the police officers who arrived promptly at the scene.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a quick recovery to the injured,” said SP Kananura.
The police annual crime report, 2024 indicates that road crashes increased from about 12,000 in 2019 to over 25,000 in 2024, more than doubling within half a decade.
