Residents of Buyanja Sub-county in Rukungiri District are reeling in shock and fear following a gruesome incident in which a man, identified as Anthony Begumisa, allegedly killed a young boy and seriously injured his brother using a panga.
The attack occurred in September 1st around 8:00 p.m in Kishonga Upper Cell, Rubanga Parish. According to local authorities, Begumisa locked himself inside a house after the fatal assault. When the Begumisa’s brother attempted to locate him, he too was attacked.
The six-year-old victim, who had been staying with relatives, was discovered hidden inside a polythene bag in a kitchen, critically wounded. He was rushed to the hospital but tragically died upon arrival.
Vincent Kakunyu, the LC1 chairman of Kishonga Upper Cell, confirmed that the deceased was a relative from Mitooma District who had been living with family in the area.
Kakunyu stated that the suspect is believed to have a history of mental illness but had recently been taken to church for prayers and believed he had become fine. Begumisa had also attacked an elderly man during the incident. The elderly victim is currently receiving treatment.
Emmy Rubondo, the Buyanja Sub-county LCIII chairperson, criticized the police for their delayed response, suggesting that quicker action could have saved the second victim. He urged families caring for individuals with psychiatric conditions to seek medical treatment rather than relying solely on spiritual interventions.
