In a period of less than a month, three schools have been reported caught up by fires in Mbarara District and no intensive report has been released by police regarding causes of school fires in the district.
The latest school to be gutted is Mbarara View School in Bihunya Cell, Katete ward Nyamitanga Division in Mbarara City.
Samson Kasasira, the police spokesperson for Rwizi region says that the fire that gutted school last night destroyed Headteacher’s office, library and the staff room.
“The Police of Mbarara City are investigating the origin of the fire that burnt the Headteachers’ office and Library at Mbarara View High school,” Kasasira said
He said that the Police Fire Brigade rushed to the school and extinguished the fire before it could spread to other buildings.
Properties worth millions and some documents were destroyed in the fire.
Police say they are yet to find out the cause of the fire stating that they have instituted a team of detectives to inquire into the causes of fire outbreaks in Mbarara schools which will give a detailed report at a later time
“A special team of detectives has been put in place to investigate the cause and motive of the people who are starting the fires in schools which has left property worth millions of shillings destroyed,” ASP Kasasira explained
He confirmed that no fatalities and or injuries have been registered in Mbarara View School fire. Other schools that have been caught up by fire in Mbarara include St. Andrew’s SS Rubindi and Mbarara Secondary School.
