In light of the suspended elections of women councils and committees, the UPC has faulted Justice Byabakama’s electoral body, EC for lack of transparency and responsibility in organising elections.
“The EC should first make thorough scrutiny and arrangements before issuing out such a comprehensive electoral programme purposely to avoid causing inconveniences to key stakeholders and financial loss. ”
This has been said by the party’s head of Media and Communications, Muzeyi Faizo while addressing journalists at the party headquarters at Uganda House in Kampala on Wednesday.
He also applauded UPC members for the spirit exhibited in the mobilization of women, “We want to thank all the Party members for the efforts and spirit they had exhibited in the mobilization of women and the Party calls upon them to continue with the Party work as we wait for the communication from the Independent Electoral Commission.”
Last week, during a consultative meeting in Gogonyo county, Pallisa district, the Electoral Commission chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama said that the Ministry of Finance informed the Commission that the Sh20b funds required for conducting the elections activities were not available in the treasury.
According to the roadmap, the nominations of candidates was scheduled to start next week.
Byabakama said the commission is engaging relevant agencies of government to address the matter stating that they will issue a new programme for the activities when the funds are availed.
By the time of cancellation, the Electoral Commission had finalized the compilation of the Village Women Residents’ Register and was conducting the display of the registers at each village/cell across the country.
