The Uganda National Meteological Authority has said that the warming of the ocean also known as el nino is likely to persist upto 2024.
According to the press statement, the equatorial sea surface temperatures( SsTs) observed at the end of July 2023 indicate that above average SSTs Were experienced across the central and western and eastern pacific ocean.
“El nino development is likely to continue in the month of September, October ,November and December “ according to Alex Ogwang the Executive Director in a Press statement
He also warned against the severe impacts of El Niño which include heavy rains
“It should be noted that El Niño does not translate into heavy rains but rather but rather an effect that modulates weather patterns leading to increased rainfall” Ogwang emphasized
Northern region and parts of Eastern and parts of mid western Uganda are expected to receive near normal to below average (slightly enhanced) while some parts of western and central regions are expected to receive near normal to below average during the month of August.
