KAMPALA
At least two juveniles have been confirmed dead, and one female adult injured in a landslide in Kisoro district, southwest Uganda.
The incident occured on the ewee hours of Wednesday in Kamugoyi village in Kababa Sub County, Kisoro district.
Kisoro District Environment Officer Eunice Akankwasa says that the incident took place amidst a Wednesday heavy downpour that swept through the house where the children were sleeping.
“Two children namely Laban Irasubiza, 13 and Brian Niyonsaba, 8, died on the spot and their bodies have been retrieved,” said Akankwatsa.
She identified the injured person as Gorgeana Juliana, a grandmother to the deceased children who is now receiving treatment at Kisoro Hospital.
Speaking to Parrots Media, the Uganda Red Cross Society public relations officer (PRO) Irene Nakasiita said bodies of the deceased were retrieved and handed over to the family.
She added that other sub-counties like Nyundo, Murora and Nyarubuye have been heavily affected and the assessmentexercise by the Red Cross team is ongoing.
