Uganda Prisons Service press unit Boss, Frank Baine has confirmed the news that reknown Boda Boda 2010 patron Hajji Abdallah Kitata and his Bodyguard Sowali has been released from Luzira prison.
The release follow hours after the Army court of Appeal sitting in Makindye on Friday overturned the 10yrs, sentence in jail slapped to Kitata and his Bodyguard Sowali Ngobi to 3yr, 8months and 6days.
Kitata was arrested and detained with others at Luzira in 2018 on charges of unlawful possession of firearms. In 2019, the General Court Martial in Makindye sentenced him and his bodyguard to 10yrs in prison.
Today Friday Aug7, Army Court Court of appeal judge, Justice Elly Turyamubina ruled that the sentence was harsh and excessive thus deducting the sentence to three years.
The duo (Kitata and his Bodyguard) were sent back to Luzira whereafter authorities calculated the period they had spent in prison in regards to court ruling and found out that they had completed their sentence.
Ideally, Kitata and his co-accused were supposed to spend 1yr and two months in prison but Frank Baine, UPS Spokesperson said the prisons also counted his remission and released him.
“When we subjected his sentenced remission, then he was supposed to have gone on July 7, 2020,”Baine said.
Kitata’s lawyer, Abdallah Kiwanuka confirmed that his client was awarded a remission and he is already at home being reunited with his family.
