KAMPALA

The Electoral Commission (EC) has dismissed reports that Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) president Hon. Jimmy Akena and his wife, Gender Minister Hon. Betty Amongi, are missing from the national voters’ register.

On Wednesday, UPC alleged that several of their candidates in Lira City, including Akena, had found their details missing from the register, raising concerns on the flaws in the national Voters’ register as the country is headed to the national elections next year.

Jimmy Akena, the UPC President said the matter first came to light when Denis Odongo, the party’s campaign manager and candidate for Lira City East mayoral seat, said his name was absent from the roll, prompting Akena and minister Amongi to verify their voter particulars on the online verification system only to find their names missing.

L-R: Gender Minister Betty Amongi Akena and UPC Presidential flagbearer Hon. Jimmy Akena Obote.

“I have voted for presidential, parliamentary and district elections at the same station for the last four elections, but today, my name has disappeared. It is both perturbing and disturbing at this stage of the process,” Akena said.

He warned that missing names on the register could undermine the credibility of the 2026 elections. “If names of people who have consistently voted are missing, then the credibility of the process is at stake. We demand a clear and transparent explanation from the Electoral Commission,” Akena said while appealing to UPC members across the country to cross-check their voter information both online and physically at polling stations to confirm their votability.

However, the EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi dismissed the claims, and clarified that both Akena and Amongi are duly registered voters in their respective polling stations.

“Both Honorable Jimmy Akena and Honorable Betty Amongi are on the National Voter’s Register in the places and locations they elected and chose to vote from. Evidence to that effect has been brought to their attention. Social media reports claiming the contrary are not correct,” Mucunguzi said.

Local governments, Parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled for next year staring from January, and electoral processes are ongoing as per the electoral commission revised roadmap.
