The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Local Government, Mr. Ben Kumumanya, has called on Local Government Communication Officers to strengthen their visibility and impact in driving national development through strategic and effective communication.
Speaking at the opening of a meeting held this morning at the Imperial Royale Hotel in Kampala, Mr. Kumumanya emphasized the importance of showcasing government achievements. He cited notable progress in sectors such as education, healthcare, recruitment, and road infrastructure. As an example, he highlighted the newly constructed administrative blocks in Kalaki and Terego districts, describing them as exemplary developments that deserve media attention.
The meeting, which brought together Communication Officers from across the country, aims to craft a comprehensive roadmap and action plan to harness communication as a tool for national transformation.
Mr. Kumumanya also underscored the critical role of Communication Officers within local governments, identifying them among the 15 key cadres that should be prioritized during recruitment. Others include the nine Heads of Department, Head of Internal Audit, Head of Procurement, Principal Human Resource Officer (PHRO), Head of the Water Department, and Secretary to the District Service Commission.
He further noted that the issue of budgeting for communication will be addressed in the upcoming meeting of Local Government Accounting Officers.
