KAMPALA
A sharp exchange has emerged following the abrupt cancellation of a Holy Mass at Lubaga Cathedral, which had been organized to pray for Rtd. Col. Dr. Kizza Besigye and other political prisoners.
The cancellation, reportedly ordered by President Yoweri Museveni, drew strong criticism from Dr. Miria Matembe, who accused Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere of bowing to political pressure. Speaking to the media, Matembe said the Archbishop should “fear God, not President Museveni,” and insisted that the Catholic Church has a duty to hold such prayers, especially during Lent when Christians reflect on the sacrifice of martyrs like Bishop Janan Luwum.
Matembe further urged religious leaders to resign if they continue to “fear the president instead of God.”
Meanwhile, Eng. Winnie Byanyima, wife to Dr. Besigye, condemned the cancellation, alleging that government pressure was behind the decision. She explained that the prayers were intended to “ease the pain on political prisoners, including her husband, and bring them before the Lord.”
The incident has sparked debate over the independence of religious institutions in Uganda and their role in advocating for justice and human rights.
