The Katikkiro of Buganda, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, has urged young people to embrace responsibility, remain hopeful and use their youthful years to engage in productive activities that benefit both themselves and society.

Speaking at Bulange, Mengo, on Wednesday, Mayiga cautioned the youth against drug abuse and other destructive behaviours, saying such practices rob them of hope and limit their potential to contribute meaningfully to development.

“When young people realise that they have a responsibility to uplift Buganda, it becomes easier for them to do meaningful work during their youth and to live with hope,” Mayiga said.

He added that many youths who indulge in alcohol, marijuana and other drugs mistakenly believe such substances give them courage and strength, yet in reality they undermine their future.

The Katikkiro made the remarks during a meeting with TikTok content creator Ahishakiye Innocent, popularly known for his creative works imitating the premiere, who paid him a courtesy visit.

Mayiga also advised the youth to make responsible use of the internet and social media, describing technology as a powerful tool that can either build or destroy, depending on how it is used.

“The benefits of innovation depend on how one uses it. The internet is one of the technological innovations we have today. If it is misused, it can be destructive, yet many young people are not aware of this,” Mayiga said, urging them to harness digital platforms for creativity, innovation and self-improvement.

Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga meeting Tik toker Innocent and his family during a courtesy visit to Bulange, Mengo on Wednesday.

In his remarks, Tik Toker Innocent implored fellow youths to use social media positively to create opportunities and improve their livelihoods. He also shared challenges he has faced in his creative work, including insults, harassment and threats from Kingdom critics.

“I have gained many good things such as meaningful friendships and public recognition, but there have also been challenges, including verbal abuse from people with misguided views about your (Katikkiro) works,” he said.

In response, Mayiga urged the content creator to remain firm and resilient, noting that criticism often accompanies success. He likened the attacks to stones thrown at a fruit-bearing tree, advising him to continue doing what he believes is right and beneficial to the public.

The Katikkiro reiterated his call for the youth to remain disciplined, hopeful and focused on activities that contribute to their personal growth and the wider development of Buganda, and Uganda at large.
