The Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) has issued a directive prohibiting male and female students from standing together as couples during the holy month of Ramadan.
In a notification dated February 20, 2026, from the university’s Academic Branch, students were warned against “standing together in couple (boy & girl)” during the fasting period.
“It is hereby to inform that during the Holy month of Ramadan standing together in couple (boy & girl) is strictly prohibited,” reads the notice signed by Prof. Dr. Akbar Rahman, Director of Academics.
The administration further warned that any students found violating the directive would have their nikah arranged immediately.
“If any couple are found standing together, their nikah will be arranged immediately,” the notice states.
The university also urged students to respect the sanctity of the institution and avoid what it described as unnecessary closeness.
“Please respect the sanctity of the university and avoid unnecessary closeness,” the notice adds.

According to the communication, any couple found in breach of the directive would also be responsible for organising their own Walima (wedding reception).
The notice, which has since circulated widely on social media, has attracted mixed reactions from the public, with some users questioning and debating the university’s enforcement measures during Ramadan.
Efforts to obtain an official comment from the university management were ongoing by press time.
