Two senior officers of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) are in custody following their arrest on the orders of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, over alleged corruption and abuse of office.
The detained officers have been identified as former Joint Staff for Policy and Strategy, Maj Don Nabasa, and Brig Gen Johnson Namanya Abaho. Abaho had been serving as Commissioner for Citizenship and Passport Management at the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control under the Ministry of Internal Affairs before he was recently recalled to the army.
According to military sources, the duo was arrested on Thursday by the Chief of Intelligence of the Armed Forces, who is also the Deputy CDF, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, acting on the directives of the CDF.
The two officers were initially detained at Mbuya Military Barracks before being transferred to the Special Forces Command (SFC) detention facility in Kasenyi.
“They have been kept in the master’s quarters pending a decision on whether they will remain in Kasenyi or be transferred to Makindye Military Barracks,” a source familiar with the matter said.
In a related development, Gen Kainerugaba has dismissed the Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, Brig Abdul Rugumayo. He has been replaced by Brig Gen Oscar Munanura, who has been serving as Assistant Deputy Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security in charge of counter-intelligence.
The reasons for Rugumayo’s dismissal had not been officially communicated by press time. He has since been directed to report to Mbuya for redeployment.
