Animal markets and meat stores in Bushenyi district are under quarantine following an outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the area.
Dr. Robert Natukunda, the Bushenyi District Veterinary Officer, says movement of animals and their products are currently under restrictions and butchers closed in some areas in the ditrict affected by the disease.
The affect the areas according to Natukunda are; Nkanga, Nyabubare, Kyamuhunga, Kakanju and Kizinda town council.
Dr. Natukunda revealed that the district has already acquired vaccines from the ministry of Agriculture Animal and Fisheries that will help to vaccinate animals against the disease whereafter the ban shall be lifted.
He added that authorities have embarked on ring vaccination in areas where the disease has been detected appealing to business operators to corporate with the district team in the vaccination exercise.
Foot and mouth disease is a deadly disease affecting cloven hoofed animals both domestic and wild animals.
Apparently, the disease outbreak has affected several other districts in Uganda like Luweero, Sheema, Ntungamo, Nakasongola and Lyantonde among other cattle keeping districts.
