The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Public Service ,Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwiire has said that art teachers will start earning Shs4 million like science teachers by the end of five years.
Bitarakwate was appearing before the Parliaments Human Rights committee on Tuesday 26th July, 2022.
Bitarakwate told the committee that they simply started with science teachers but the plan is to have all teachers earn the same.
It should be recalled that last month, the teachers’ union, Uganda National Teachers’ Union (UNATU), staged a nationwide three-week demonstration salary enhancement for all teachers.
This was after government announced it had increased salaries of all scientists including science teachers by 300 %.
However, the industrial action was called off after holding a series of meetings with President Yoweri Museveni.
“The art teachers insist that we should use the available resources to improve salaries across the board. Whilst this is possible, it does not solve the salary issue. It is okumemerera (sprinkling), where everyone will get a little, and then next year everyone strikes, “ Museveni told UNATU leaders.
Although government increased science teachers salaries, the minister of public service, Muruli Mukasa has told tbe committee that there is no enough money to pay them. He revealed that of the Shs800bn is needed for teachers’ salary enhancement, they only have Shs200bn.
The minister further assured Ugandans that government will finalize the process of establishing Salaries Review Commission by the end of this year calendar
