Basajjabalaba, who has served as Bushenyi LCV chairman, was seeking a re-election on an independent ticket after losing to Prosper in the NRM Primaries. He reportedly stepped aside following discussions with the National Resistance Movement (NRM) national chairman President Yoweri Museveni, and other party top leaders on Sunday, September 28.

Confirming the development, President Museveni said Basajjabalaba and other party members had agreed to withdraw from the race in the spirit of fostering unity within the ruling party.

“I met my daughter Resty Namutamba from Luuka and Mr Jafari Basajjabalaba, the LC5 Chairman of Bushenyi, both of whom belong to the NRM. I wish to commend them for accepting to withdraw from the race in favor of the NRM flag bearers,” Museveni said.

The President emphasized that the decision aligns with NRM’s core principles, noting that it prevents divisions and saves resources.

Party insiders suggest that Basajjabalaba, a long-serving politician in the district, could be lined up for a senior government appointment as part of the wider strategy to maintain cohesion within the party.

With the incumbent out of the way, Twebaze is expected to cruise to victory unchallenged, barring any late nominations from other political camps.
