Incarcerated Dr. Kizza Besigye has called off his eight days hunger strike after his case file was transferred to a civilian court.
This was revealed by his defense lawyer, Erias Lukwago, who said that Besigye would resume eating food provided by his supporters as he continues his fight for freedom.
“Now that Dr Besigye has been formally arraigned before the Magitrate’s Court on the charges of treason, he has decided to call off the hunger strike since now there’s a valid remand warrant
On Friday, Besigye alongside Hajji Obeid Lutale appeared before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate Court where they were charged with treason. The magistrate further sent them back to Luzira saying that the court cannot try matters of this nature, and adjourned the matter to March 7.
Besigye’s hunger strike followed Supreme Court’s ruling which outlawed for trial of the civilians the General Court Martial was illegal. He argued that he was being held without pending charges or a court appearance.
With the new treason charges, Besigye’s legal team plans to apply for bail again and will deliver food to him at Luzira prison.
