KAMPALA
Dr. Kizza Besigye, a prominent opposition figure in Uganda, has once again been denied bail in a case where he and two others face terrorism-related charges.
On Wednesday, Dr. Kizza Besigye, his aide Obed Lutale, and Captain Denis Oola were arraigned before the Nakawa magistrate court and remanded until May 21st.

The trio is accused of plotting to overthrow the government between 2023 and late 2024, a conspiracy the prosecution claims stretches across multiple countries, including Switzerland, Greece, Kenya, and Uganda.
Despite several attempts, the court has refused to grant them bail. Defence lawyers say their clients are being held in inhumane conditions, including solitary confinement at Luzira Prison.
Defence lawyer Erias Lukwago said, “Dr. Besigye and Hajj Lutale are being held in solitary confinement, with no meaningful interaction with other inmates. This isn’t just confinement. It’s isolation.”
The defence also criticized restrictions on family and medical access. Lawyer Mpanga called for more humane treatment and extended visitation hours.

“We respectfully request that the court allow the accused more humane conditions, including opportunities to speak with their families and legal counsel.” Lawyer Mpanga said.
The case resumes later next month, as calls grow louder for the court to uphold the accused’s pretrial rights.
