MPIGI:
Mpigi High Court has set Friday as the day it will start hearing of the election petition filed by NUP’s Betty Ssentamu, a sister to NUP party president, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, challenging the election of Sylivia Nayebare (NRM) as Gomba district Woman MP.
The decision by court to set a hearing date follow failed mediations between the two parties.
Nayebare had asked court to enter into mediation with the petitioner which the court allowed to solve the issue before the hearing of the case.
The Mpigi resident judge, Justice Anthony Ojule, then appointed Vianney Ssekikasi to facilitate the mediation, which took place on Friday at Mpigi court, however, Ssentamu rejected mediation talks stating that she did not asked for mediations and opted for a court battle.
“I did not ask for mediations. It is the first respondent who asked court to enter into mediations with us, but we found it difficult to agree to her demands. We instead opted to settle the matter in court.” Ssentamu said.
She argued that agreeing to the terms in the mediations would mean a betrayal to her elzctorate, who voted her massively.
The first respondent (Nayebare) told Parrots UG that she had opted for mediations to save time and resources that would be wasted in processing the case.
“My friend dis not frel contented with the mediations, yet she had agreed to the same. We are now ready to face off with her inside court. I am ready to defend my victory which I won.” Nayebare said.
Nayebare won the January 14 Gomba district Woman MP after garnering 30,253 votes against Ssentamu who became second with 22,657 votes.
The petitioner is represented by lawyers from Mperium Advocates, while Nayebare is represented by Alexander Kibandama of Ortus Africa Law Firm.
