Popular Rukungiri-based radio station Boona FM 91.8 Rugambamazima has announced a temporary suspension of its operations, effective midnight on September 11, 2025. The move comes in response to a directive issued by the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) in July.
Station Director Maanige Wenceslas confirmed the development, stating that while all technical systems remain functional, the decision to go off-air was made in compliance with UCC’s instructions.
“We hope to come back to air soon after settling our grievances with UCC,” said Maanige.
The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) on 4th July, 3025 directed Boona FM in Rukungiri district to immediately suspend all programs hosted by radio manager and presenter Kakyene Namanya over allegations of false and malicious broadcasts, in violation of the Minimum Broadcasting Standards.
In a letter dated July 4, 2025, and addressed to the Managing Director of Boona FM, UCC said it had received complaints accusing the station of airing content that undermines government programs and misleads the public.
Boona FM has been a staple in the region’s media landscape, known for its local news coverage, community engagement, and entertainment programming. The sudden pause in transmission has left many listeners concerned, though management has assured the public that the closure is temporary.
The nature of the directive from UCC has not been publicly detailed, and efforts to clarify the circumstances remain ongoing. Meanwhile, Boona FM has expressed optimism about resolving the matter and resuming normal operations in the near future.
