The Electoral Commission (EC) has called for calmness as nationwide campaigns for candidates contesting Village Local Council (LC1) chairperson and Women Committee positions begins.
Speaking on Monday, EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi said the campaigns are taking place in all of Uganda’s 71,214 villages and urged candidates, supporters and agents to conduct themselves peacefully and in accordance with electoral laws.
According to the EC roadmap for local council elections, campaigns for Women Committee candidates will run from July 20 to July 22, with daily campaign hours set between 7:00am and 6:00pm. Elections for the committees are scheduled for Thursday, July 23.
“Meanwhile, campaigns for LC1 chairperson candidates will continue until Monday, July 27, ahead of polling on Tuesday, July 28,” Mucunguzi said.
He appealed to all participants to comply with guidelines issued by Electoral Commission officials and ensure campaigns do not disrupt normal public activities.
He warned that campaigns should not be conducted in schools, hospitals, health centres or markets, urging candidates to instead use house-to-house mobilisation and small meetings in designated spaces.
“The Commission wishes all Ugandans a peaceful, credible, transparent and law-abiding campaign and polling period,” Mucunguzi said.
The LC1 and Women Committee elections are part of the ongoing local council electoral roadmap, with millions of Ugandans expected to participate in choosing village leaders across the country.
