KAMPALA
The police at CPS Kampala has in custody a police officer captured in an earlier video assisting people in dumping plastics and other garbage in a drainage channel in downtown Kampala.
The officer whose details are yet to identify was seen in an undated video making rounds on social media improperly disposing of plastic waste and other garbage in a drainage channel. This caused public alarms on climate justice prompting the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA) to dispatch an investigations team to take up the case and have the people involved arrested and charged under Littering scheme.
Latest reports from the environmental authority indicate that the corp was arrested yesterday (Friday 14th July, 2023) and he is being held at Kampala Central Police Station on charges of Littering the environment.
NEMA applauded the public for exposing individuals who degrade the environment and noted concerns to enforce waste management in the country.
“One of the areas of concern in managing plastics is whether, everything imported should come wrapped in plastic Also, waste management in malls and arcades in CBD. All these will be looked into by KCCA,” the authority said.
