The LDC court in Kampala has denied bail to female activists of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) who were arrested on Monday for protesting against skyrocketing prices of commodities in Uganda and the arrest of Dr. Kizza Besigye.
The women are Soroti Woman MP Anna Adeke, Kampala Deputy Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura and Margaret Wokuri, a woman leader in the party.
On Monday, the women and others at large stormed streets protesting skyrocketing prices of commodities and the long detention of their former party president Dr. Kizza Besigye. They were apprehended and remanded to prison.
On Tuesday morning, they were arraigned before the LDC court which further remanded them to prison until June7.
According FDC, the cadre magistrate dismissed bail applications for the convicts on grounds that he needs more time to study documents by their sureties.
“Our women leaders have been denied bail. And they are remanded until June 7. The cadre magistrate says he needs time to study documents presented by the sureties”, FDC has said.
On Monday, FDC’s deputy secretary general Harold Kaija condemned the arrest of the women leaders saying they have a right to protest.
“The party is concerned with the manner in which the police have handled the demonstration by women. We saw police officers beating women who were carrying out a peaceful demonstration. We think a country like Uganda must respect women,” he said
The party has further accused the judiciary of serving only interests of one individual- President Museveni somthing that affects the independence of the judiciary and other institutions.
