The High Court in Kasese district on Tuesday started hearing of the plea bargaining of fifty criminal cases, with aggravated defilement topping the number of cases.
According to court, of the 50 cases being handled, 37 are aggravated defilement cases something that is worrying residents and authorities in the District.
Six murders cases will according to court be handled in a plea bargaining among other gender based violance related cases and handled by the High Court Judge, Justice Emmy Mugabo.
The reporter learned that among the murder cases that were handled on the first day includes Mr. Hosea Kule case whom court convicted and sentenced to Eight years imprisonment after taking plea of guilty of murder.
Court heard that on June 2, 2020 Mr. Hosea Kule while in Nyamughona II village in Bwera Sub couty murdered Amon Muhind, a Businessman in Bwera sub county.
In the same court, Counsel Luke Kanyonyi of Masereka C & Co. Advocates representing his client, Ms. Edith Kiconco, a murder suspect, asked court to amend the charge sheet from murder to manslaughter since she never practically participated in the murder.
Court further sentenced a one Mr. Kabundu Mumbere to 10 yrs imprisonment after finding him guilty of beating to death his wife for allegedly failing to serve him food yet he had not left behind money to purchase the food.
It is alleged that on March21, 2019, Kabubdu while at Hamukungu landing site in Lake Katwe sub county beat his wife to death in a domestic violence. Court then granted him a lenient sentence to 10 yrs imprisonment deducting 3yrs he had spent on remand.
The lenient sentence came after the suspect’s defense lawyer , Geoffrey Mishelle asked court to give his client a lenient sentence citing out that he (Kabundu) is a sole bread winner for his nine children and that he is the first time offender.
It should be recalled that the Kasese District Deputy RDC, Joshua Masereka recently asked courts to give heavier punishments to suspects of defilement whom he said are enemies of the future of the young girls.
