The Uganda People’s Congress has spoken out about their position the Dokolo district Woman MP by-election after reports indicated that some political parties were seeking for engagements to field a joint candidate.
In a strong statement, the UPC head of media and communications, Muzeyi Faizo said they will not back any candidate fielded by the opposition rather they will support their own candidate, Sarah Aguti Nyangkori.
“Why doesn’t the FDC also back our candidate? As UPC, we don’t vote people because of who they are or where they come from. We vote individuals because of their abilities and our candidate is a strong candidate for Dokolo district Woman MP seat,” he said.
Last week, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) said it was engaging other opposition political parties to back their candidate, Dr. Alwoc RoseMary Ogwal to replace her late mother Hon. Cecilia Ogwal Imat as Dokolo Woman MP. However, UPC has rebuffed the idea.
Furthermore, UPC has asked the electoral commission and other stakeholders to ensure a free and fair election in Dokolo during campaigns and on polling day.
“We don’t want to see violence as we have been seeing in the past by-elections […] We should allow the people of Dokolo to freely exercise their mandate to vote a candidate of their choice,” said Muzeyi Faizo.
UPC on Monday declared Sarah Aguti Nyangkori as their official flag bearer in Dokolo district Woman MP by-election. The party said processes are ongoing for endorsement of candidates for Special Interest Groups. Polling for Dokolo district Woman MP will take place on Thursday 21st March, 2024.
