In a recent development, the Democratic Party (DP) has commended traders for conducting a peaceful demonstration and urged them to stay focused on their cause. The traders have kept their promise by closing up shops to protest against various issues such as Chinese involvement in local trading and high taxation.
Ismail Kirya, the acting spokesperson for the DP, praised the traders for their peaceful demonstration, stating that it is important to maintain this approach to ensure their message is heard loud and clear. He emphasized the significance of remaining focused to achieve the desired outcome, highlighting the impact of such protests on government revenue.
Kirya called on the government to engage in dialogue with all stakeholders involved in the issue to find a peaceful resolution. Similarly, Salimu Uhuru, Mayor of Kampala Central Division Urban Council, expressed support for the traders’ strike and encouraged them to stand firm in their demands.
Uhuru acknowledged the negative consequences of closing up shops on the socio-economic development of the country but emphasized the importance of addressing the grievances of the traders. He criticized the heavy police deployment during the peaceful demonstration and called for a more constructive approach to resolving the situation.
DP and local authorities are urging both the traders and the government to engage in meaningful dialogue to address the concerns raised by the protesting traders and work towards a mutually beneficial solution.
