The Democratic Party (DP) has expressed grave concerns over the escalating garbage problem in Kampala, warning of a potential disease outbreak and flooding during the ongoing rain season.
Since the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill, garbage collection in the city has been marred by inefficiencies, increased fees, and delays. “Residents have resorted to throwing garbage in water channels which puts them at a risk of blockage”Kiirya noted with concern.
According to Ismail Kiirya, AG Party Spokesperson, the garbage accumulation poses a significant risk of diseases like cholera and floods.
“Garbage has become a monumental challenge in the city, and we urge KCCA to devise plans to reduce the garbage heaps,” Kiirya stressed. He also appealed to KCCA councilors and the Lord Mayor to prioritize this issue over internal conflicts.
Kiirya noted that since the collapse of the Kiteezi landfill, there has been inadequate ollection rate where only 60% of garbage is collected, with 40% remaining uncollected.
He also revealed that there are insufficient garbage trucks. “KCCA’s 29 trucks are inadequate, with only 22 in working condition”,concluded Kiirya.
