The Electoral Commission (EC) has issued a stern warning to “rogue elements” who have reportedly grabbed and destroyed voters’ registers from village election officials during the ongoing nationwide display exercise.

The EC noted that while the incidents are isolated and few, tampering with or destroying election materials is a serious electoral offense punishable under Ugandan law.

Addressing the journalists on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, Julius Mucunguzi, the Commission’s Spokesperson revealed that they have received complaints that some individuals had attacked village election officials at display centers, confiscated registers, and either destroyed them or fled with them in various villages across the country.

“The Electoral Commission wants to send out a very strong warning to such characters… that tampering or destroying election materials is an electoral offense that is triable to the maximum extent of the law,” Mucunguzi stated, adding that no such acts will go unpunished.

The Commission has alerted both the public and the Uganda Police Force to remain vigilant and arrest any individuals attempting to disrupt the grassroots electoral process.

The warning comes as the public display of the voters’ registers officially concludes today, July 14, 2026. The registers are being updated ahead of the National Women Committee elections scheduled for July 23, 2026, and the Village (LC1) Chairpersons elections on July 28, 2026.

Ugandans who have not yet verified their particulars have been urged to use the final hours of the exercise to ensure the integrity of the register. The EC emphasized that citizens must check their details and help identify and remove foreigners, underage individuals under 18, and non-residents from the village registers.

“Collectively we can be able to have a voters’ register that is reliable, accurate, and that will be a foundation for credible elections,” Mucunguzi appealed.
