Following reports of alleged corruption and extortion of passengers using Entebbe Airport by the staff, the ministry of internal affairs has asked for evidence on the same.
Simon Peter Mundeyi, the Ministry spokesperson says that anybody with vivid evidence which may lead to the arrest of the culprits to report to the relevant authorities.
Mundeyi also threatened to arrest individuals caught bribing their staff at Entebbe Airport in exchange for quick services.
Last week, the public raised alarm over corruption and extortion by Entebbe Airport staff who were accused of asking for bribes in dollars (about $100) from travelers before allowing them to board. In several videos shared on social media platforms like Tik Tok, Facebook and Twitter, many users claimed to have missed their flights because they refused to give in to such demands.
In a statement issued by the Director Immigration and Citizenship Major General Apollo Kasiita Agowa which Parrots UG seen, the ministry has put in place several measures to curb the vice of corruption and extortion at the airport.
“All immigration staff must be in full uniform complete with name tags on their shirts. Immigration staff will now not use phones while at work in the booth, in office . Phones have been forbidden to our staff who are handling the public especially at the airport” read a statement in parts.
On Friday, authorities and institutions in charge of the Airport held a closed door meeting with their staff
and some were suspended pending investigations.
However, the Internal affairs ministry mouthpiece dismissed some reports of extortion as sensational and defamatory allegations without any proof backing up them.
